HUGO VICKERS Biographer & Historian
Books

Hugo Vickers has recently published two new books -

St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by Hugo Vickers, Photographs by Elizabeth Vickers

St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle - a book about St George's Chapel, Windsor, written for St George's Chapel. Photographed by Elizabeth Vickers. Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, KG. All the proceeds go to the Chapel. Hugo Vickers, who has known St George's Chapel well since 1964, tells the story of the chapel through the Kings and Queens, Deans, Canons, architects, organists and benefactors, who have made the chapel what it is today - one of the finest examples of perpendicular architecture in the country, still fulfilling its original mission of service as a religious foundation.

Reviews -

'It was a shrewd idea of the veteran royal writer, Hugo Vickers, to mark the 660th anniversary of the foundation of both the Order of the Garter and of the College of St George (as St George's should technically be know) to bring out a combined historical and architectural volume. In fact, it turns out to be more historical than architectural, though it contains a full quotient of dazzling photographs taken by the author's wife. While modestly disclaiming any specialised knowledge, Vickers has known St George's for many years, having first been introduced to it while a pupil at a nearby prep school and going on to be one of its Sunday afternoon guides while an Eton schoolboy. He is particularly strong on its more recent past, providing thumbnail sketches of a variety of it more colourful personalities ... ' - Anthony Howard, The Times, 7 May 2008.

'HRH The Duke of Edinburgh pays tribute to the author and to the photographer and with good cause, as you will see the minute you open this fascinating book.' - Lindsay Fulcher, The Lady, 13 to 19 May 2008.

'An excellent new book on St George's Chapel' - Robert Hardman, Daily Mail, 12 June 2008.

'Written by Hugo Vickers and illustrated with superb pictures taken by his wife, Elizabeth, this is a remarkable family production. From the short biographies presented in this book, a vivid, human history of this foundation emerges.' John Goodall, Country Life, 17 September 2008.

Copies of 'St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle' can be obtained from St George's Chapel Shop at £19.99 plus shipping charges (£5 within the UK and £13 outside the UK). The shop accepts credit cards (excluding American Express) or £ Sterling cheques payable to "St George's Chapel Bookshop Ltd".
